Indexical Expressions in the Scope of Attitude Verbs

چکیده

A sentential theory of attitudes holds that propositions (the things that agents believe and know) are sentences of a representation language. Given such a theory, it is natural to suggest that the proposition expressed by an utterance of natural language is also a sentence of a representation language. This leads to a straightforward account of the semantics of attitude verbs. However, this kind of theory encounters problems in dealing with indexicals: expressions such as "L" "here," and "now." It is hard to explain how an indexical in the scope of an attitude verb can be opaque. This paper suggests that while the propositions that agents believe and know are sentences, the propositions expressed by utterances are not sentences: they are singular propositions, of the type used in Kaplan's theory of direct reference. Drawing on recent work in situation semantics, this paper shows how such a theory can describe the semantics of attitude verbs and account for the opacity of indexicals in the scope of these verbs.

ly, ‘as such’, following ‘Superman’ in ( 2 a), that is, if ( 2 a) means ( 3 ) Lois believes that Superman, as such, can fly. Here ‘such’ refers not to the name ‘Superman’, but by a kind of deferred ostension, through the name to something associated with it. Of course, there is no need to deny that ( 2 a) can also be understood in a way that legitimizes substitution, or in the standard jargon, ...

Towards an Indexical Model of Situated Language Comprehension for Cognitive Agents in Physical Worlds

We propose a computational model of situated language comprehension based on the Indexical Hypothesis that generates meaning representations by translating amodal linguistic symbols to modal representations of beliefs, knowledge, and experience external to the linguistic system. This Indexical Model incorporates multiple information sources, including perceptions, domain knowledge, and short-te...

On Indexical Reference

Thesis: Indexicals are not essential in the sense of being semantically irreducible; the arguments for the semantic irreducibility of indexicals only apply to referentially-opaque readings of indexicals in the scope of attitude verbs. Suppose, Sally, Peter and Max spend a nice evening in a pub, and Max suddenly utters: (1) Max: I’ve lost my wallet. That’s an unpleasant situation. Not only will ...

. Propositional Attitudes . Attitude Ascriptions

Verbs like 'believes, ' 'knows, ' 'suspects, ' 'hopes, ' and 'worries'—verbs that, at the level of logical form, can take 10 clauses as their complements—are generally taken to denote intentional attitudes borne to a proposition. For this reason they are known as propositional attitude verbs. It is difficult to construct a semantics and prag-matics adequate to the features of these verbs. Any s...
